Senior Fellow’s Foreword
Global | Regional | Singapore
At the heart of our thinking is the recognition of reality as it unfolds because understanding the world as it is, not as we hope it to be, is the first step to making sound decisions. Each perspective in our Global, Regional, Singapore framework forms a single significant building block of our understanding: the insights, disciplined reasoning and strategic foresight that our teams continually cultivate, shaping the successes of our initiatives at Fat Tiger Think Tank.
In the decisions we made in framing our analysis, we were keenly aware of the importance of Focusing on What is Knowable, studying structural drivers and aligning our actions with long-term value creation. We emphasized principled thinking, compounding insights over time and identifying opportunities where conditions are most favourable— approaches championed by Ray Dalio and Warren Buffett.
Of note, our people take deliberate attention to examine Global reinvention of the international order and political economy which presents an inflection of immense opportunities for growth and innovation. We closely study the Regional landscape of ASEAN which has a 600-million-strong population powerhouse with vast demographic advantages, not to mention it being the fastest-rising middle class and a fast accelerating digital economy. Within this context, we focus on its relation to Singapore and how the big picture can be formed, continuing to grow from strength to strength as it positions for success in a changing world through its nimbleness, confidence and enduring openness.
Atop this philosophy towards analysis, we set out to architecture the right frameworks to leverage these insights and unlock their potential.
To an outside observer, our work may seem defined by data, models and reports. Yet, the true strength of our process lies in our ability to Monitor Global Developments, Track Shifts in Regional Markets and provide Singaporean business leaders with timely, meaningful updates— especially those looking outward to opportunities in ASEAN’s rising economies such as Thailand and Indonesia.
Pertinently, we designed our processes to ensure that insights do not remain static, but instead compound into deeper understanding and clearer judgement over time.
Against a backdrop of global re-ordering, ASEAN’s demographic and economic transformation alongside Singapore’s continual evolution as a confident, nimble and open hub, a great purpose was forged. Forming the fundamental motivation and serving as an eternal inspiration, the right purpose can foster clarity, alignment and long-term commitment across Global, Regional and Singapore dimensions.
We regularly communicated and contextualized the reinvention of the global political economy, ASEAN’s long-term structural opportunities and Singapore’s enduring strengths, so as to inspire and align our peoples’ roles in the overall strategy. This served to give purpose to every analysis, every recommendation, and every action— highlighting the significance of our contributions which collectively compound into the successes of Fat Tiger Think Tank.
