Building Thailand’s Beveridge Curve: New Insights of Thailand’s Labour Markets with Internet Job Platforms
Thailand presents new insights into its labour market dynamics through the construction of a Beveridge curve using two distinct data sources: administrative records from the government’s Department of Employment (DOE) and user-generated data from online job platforms.
This pioneering study highlights the value of plotting the relationship between job vacancies and unemployment to better understand market tightness and matching efficiency. The online platforms reflect the experiences of young, urban, educated job seekers, while the DOE data captures a broader, blue-collar demographic with greater regional coverage.
Both datasets reveal that Thailand’s labour market has grown tighter in recent years, especially post-pandemic, with job vacancies outpacing job seekers in some segments. The findings urge policymakers to maintain and expand these data monitoring efforts, as traditional unemployment rates alone are insufficient to capture the full complexity of Thailand’s evolving labour market.
