Thailand’s Passport to AI Controversy

Thailand has taken steps to strengthen AI resilience through domestic large language models, data-centre requirements and the TH-AI Passport, which provides free access to AI tools for five million citizens. However, the flagship scheme faces questions over its objectives, target users, usage limitations, procurement process and evaluation framework. With only 1.5 million registrations reported, measuring registrations alone may not demonstrate meaningful productivity gains. Greater clarity on measurable outcomes, transparent procurement and budgetary procedures, and a clearly defined purpose would strengthen Thailand’s broader efforts to expand AI adoption and resilience.
