In a Fragmenting Global Order, Indonesia and Its Peers Should Lead Through Openness
At the Foreign Policy Community of Indonesia’s Middle Powers Strategic Dialogue, participants highlighted the growing fragmentation of the global order amid intensifying US-China competition. The discussion emphasized the need for middle powers such as Indonesia, Japan, Australia, and Canada to play a more proactive role in shaping regional outcomes through open, rules-based, and flexible cooperation. The Free and Open Indo-Pacific (FOIP) framework was presented as a practical model that aligns with Indonesia’s strategic interests, including secure maritime access and diversified partnerships. Greater collaboration among middle powers is viewed as essential to strengthening economic resilience, regional stability, and inclusive governance in the Indo-Pacific.
