ASEAN and Canada: Building Bridges with the Great White North
The ASEAN-Canada Strategic Partnership’s 2026–2030 Plan of Action and the anticipated conclusion of the ASEAN-Canada Free Trade Agreement (ACAFTA) signal efforts to deepen economic ties and strengthen Canada’s relevance in Southeast Asia. While Canada remains relatively low in ASEAN’s perceived strategic importance, its competitive strengths in agriculture, fertilisers, food products, energy, and critical minerals offer opportunities for greater cooperation. Expanding trade in these areas could support ASEAN’s food and energy security while opening new markets for Canadian exports. A targeted approach focused on food security and energy transition could provide Canada with a distinctive role in the region.
