Preparing ASEAN Talent for the Future of Work

ASEAN is entering a critical period as shifts in global production networks, digitalisation, and the green energy transition reshape labour markets and create new opportunities in sectors such as artificial intelligence, semiconductors, renewable energy, and advanced manufacturing. While the region is increasingly positioned as an important node in global value chains and a growing digital market, its ability to capture long-term gains is constrained by persistent gaps in human capital development, uneven education investment, limited high-skilled labour mobility, and misalignment between evolving youth expectations and existing training systems. Although ASEAN has established several regional frameworks to address these challenges, implementation remains uneven across Member States. To sustain competitiveness and promote inclusive growth, ASEAN requires a more coordinated workforce transformation strategy that strengthens education and skills development, supports lifelong learning, enhances talent mobility, and deepens collaboration among governments, industry, and training institutions.
