CNBC's Interview with Warren Buffett
At 95, Warren Buffett is still making billion-dollar decisions, and this time, one of them involves changing a philanthropic pledge he once called “lifetime.” After giving more than US$47 billion to the Gates Foundation, Buffett explains why he is now directing future donations to his own family foundations, while addressing questions about Bill Gates and the recent scrutiny surrounding his ties to Jeffrey Epstein.
Buffett says the decision is ultimately about ensuring his remaining fortune is put to work on his own timeline. He wants the more than US$140 billion in Berkshire Hathaway shares he still holds to be distributed to charity by the end of 2034, and says he has greater confidence in his children’s foundations to carry out his philanthropic goals.
The conversation goes well beyond philanthropy. Buffett reveals that Berkshire’s more than US$31 billion Alphabet investment was his idea, gives his vote of confidence to Greg Abel as Berkshire’s successor and shares his thoughts on the Federal Reserve and its new chairman, Kevin Warsh. Watch the full interview for an unusually candid look at the thinking behind some of Buffett’s biggest decisions, delivered, naturally, over another Cherry Coke.
